Faith-to-Faith

Vision

Jyoti Saroop Foundation is dedicated to social harmony and the peaceful, productive existence of people of all faiths or no-faith.

Dream

The illustration above conceptualises our vision of a perfect ‘faith-full’ society. It draws inspiration from a story in the travels of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee, the founder of the Sikh Faith:

The Story

“Even today, Multan is famed for its mausoleums. These stand testimony to the famed Pirs (Spiritual Beings) that once lived, taught and preached in the area.

When Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee arrived here, the number of Pirs and their followers in the city was tremendous. They felt threatened by the Guru. They feared he would detract from their following or become a rival.

Together, they planned to give a signal to the Guru, with which they could test his wisdom and tell him to leave. They came to the Guru with a bowl of warm milk filled to the brim. This wasn’t a pleasantry; it was an instruction. It signified that Multan is already full of spiritual teachers, there was no room for another and that he should leave.

The Guru understood and gave his response in the same riddled way the pirs had. Instead of drinking the milk or spilling it, he did something extraordinary. He took a jasmine flower and dropped it into the bowl.

The flower floated to the surface of the milk and infused it with fragrance. The Peers could not understand.

The Guru explained, that as Multan was already full of different faiths and spiritual leaders, he had no intention of either assimilating with them or replacing them. Instead, like the floating jasmine flower, he and his followers will always retain their separate identity in the world.

Secondly, as the flower added scent to the milk without changing its substance, the Guru will spread his message of love and meditation to all people without altering their foundational beliefs.”
